Sacrifice Tree

Along the bright blue shoreline
of a lake called Muckno
near the town of Castleblayney
grows a beech tree tall
and white-barked with a
thousand pennies driven in
giving, it is hoped, good luck
to those who owned the pennies.
But, as the years go by,
the good luck tree begins
to die from copper poisoning,
all for the sake of human luck.
